6 Random Moving Tips for 2023

Now, I’m sure there are tons more good tips out there, but you need a good place to start.

Like many day-to-day activities, moving is a collection of actions that when executed in the correct order can lead to a very positive experience. There are likely thousands of moving tips out there, maybe even hundreds of thousands.

Put heavier items on the bottoms of boxes, lighter items on top

This may seem like common sense, but in the heat of the moment, it’s too easy to throw things in boxes willy-nilly. Placing heavy items on the bottom of the box will give the box stability and prevent it from being disturbed too much by the journey. If you're loading the truck yourself, pack your heaviest boxes first, toward the front of the truck, for balance - I’m sure the driver will greatly appreciate the thoughtfulness.

Don't leave empty spaces in the boxes

Boxes take up space. While that may sound like an ironic twist, it’s true. A box is a square vessel. Filling that vessel up inefficiently can leave behind a boat-load of space. Make use of nooks and crannies by filling them up with clothing, towels, small random items, or even packing paper to absorb the bumps. Boxes that feel “solid” are more likely to end up at their destination in one piece. A well-filled box is also more likely to be balanced and hold up well when stacked.

Tape your moving boxes well

Can one ever use too much tape? Maybe, but finding out one’s using too little tape when one’s undies are strewn all over the highway is definitely not the way to go! Use a couple of pieces of tape to close the bottom and top seams, then use one of the top secret movers' techniques by making a couple of wraps all the way around the box's top and bottom edges, where stress is concentrated.

Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box

Why does my stationery smell like soap? I could’ve sworn I packed the tea and biscuits in this box, but all I can find is a mess of cables. Sound familiar? I’d recommend packing boxes room by room as it will make your packing quicker and your unpacking a lot easier, too. When you’re at your destination, plant those specific boxes in the destination rooms and areas to spread out the stress of having to unpack everything at once. Hurrah! No more soapy stationery!

Label your boxes per room

Similar to the point above, clearly labeling each box per room will make the mission of unpacking everything in the end so much easier. As a bonus tip, mark each box largely and clearly and insulate the title behind some tape just in case it gets slightly wet.

Use the right size boxes

Give each box some thought. Larger boxes may seem like the perfect spot for a good amount of heavy items, but just think about how heavy each one will be once full. When you pack books for moving, pack them or other heavy items in small boxes; light items, like linens and pillows, can be packed in bigger ones. Any good mover worth their salt has every right to complain about large, poorly packed, incredibly heavy boxes. They not only make the job harder but also have a better chance of breaking.

Now, I’m sure there are tons more good tips out there, but you need a good place to start. Good luck with your next move and come back real soon.
